What automation builders do
Workflow builders connect a model to the rest of your tools: a new email arrives, a model summarises it, the summary goes to a chat channel and a row is added to a spreadsheet. You assemble such flows from blocks in a visual editor instead of writing a program. This page lists n8n, Make, Zapier, Activepieces and Dify.
What the cards tell you
the pricing type and whether there is a free plan;
whether you can host the tool yourself or it is cloud only;
for open-source projects, the licence and GitHub stars.
Terms and prices are those on the vendor's page on the date shown on the card. Free plans of cloud builders are generous enough to test an idea, but they cap the number of runs or operations per month, so estimate your volume before you settle on one.
Self-hosted or cloud
The main decision is where the tool runs. n8n, Activepieces and Dify can be installed on your own server, which keeps data under your control and removes per-task fees, at the cost of maintaining the server. Make and Zapier are cloud services: nothing to install, but you pay by the number of operations or tasks, and a free plan limits the runs per month. A small VPS is usually enough to host a self-hosted builder.
Which one fits
Zapier and Make are quick for linking popular web apps without technical knowledge. n8n suits technical teams that want code nodes and AI agents next to ordinary steps. Activepieces is an open alternative with a similar approach. Dify is aimed less at connecting apps and more at building chatbots and assistants over your own documents.
Whichever you choose, the model behind the AI steps is a separate choice: see the leaderboards for quality and the API providers for access.
